hi everyone my name is Miss Klein I teach 9th grade English and if you are watching this video your child might be in my 4th 5th or 6. English class Welcome to the virtualbox let's get started and I can share some information about my class I'm so like I mentioned my name is Miss Klein I teach English for 9th grade and then I also teach English language development as Hollywood High School in we are going to be working on a lot of different skills throughout the course of this year it's definitely going to be interesting in this new virtual realm of learning but I think it's the Grace and I think they're going to walk away with no experience and some new skills but we're going to be focusing on critical thinking argumentative writing narrative story lines enhancing vocabulary grammar all the good stuff if you want to pause this video at any point to take a look and read over any of this you're more than welcome to do so here's a little outline of the year just some of the big Concepts that you or you and your students so for the programs that we are going to be using online I have a list of right here so we are going to be using something called read Theory Newsela listenwise and airpod all of these online programs are used to help enhance learning along with the zoom session that we have in any of the asynchronous work that your child is working on read Theory the really read Theory Newsela great reading platform listenwise is really cool for listening comprehension vocabulary development and nearpod is really cool with like critical thinking digital less and it's also very attractive I'm over here we've got to semester projects that we're going to be working on our first semester project is called the Justice League skills project it's very very cool it focuses on social justice what's going on in the world right now so it's very relevant and then the second semester we're going to be working on something called hero project and that's very very cool to get you develop a story based on a hero and they create we work on character development creative writing and then lastly on here we got the digital notebook while my circles are very bad and your students should be aware rather digital notebook and should be updating it every class that we have every day there is a warm-up writing prompt that your child is participating in and working on when they join class so that is a live liver breathing virtual notebook that they are working we also will put some notice some Reflections in there so it's definitely something that they should be aware of and if they're not at definitely have them with me or email me or ask me a question so here's my grading scale and I use Mastery learning and Grading as a way to assess so if you take a look on here I've got my learning targets over here on the side and I've got the grading scale over here on the left so there are six learning Target. your child is kind of focusing on in my class we have writing reading analysis grammar speaking and listening digital citizenship and use of technology and then I'm being a selfie so these are the 6 learning targets and ultimately leads each learning Target will receive a grade each learning Target will receive a grade from 02 for sewing before you can think of it as like an a this is this shows absolute Mastery of the skill so if you are a student gets a 4 in writing that means they really have mastered whatever the writing was in which we were you know I'm working on three that's considered like a ba2 is like a c a one is a d and then a 0 is an F now it's very very play hard to get a 0 a 0 is essentially your child does not submit anything so that's what is 0 equates to down here I just have like a little visual just Joe to show how I'm really all about the growth mindset of my students I want to see them evolve and start learning and growing I I don't really want to grade them on a points-based system I don't want just to be a math Asian and that shows me what they've learned I would really prefer to see growth of them as an individual and their skills throughout the course of the semester and ultimately that's how I will grade them so growth mindset I'm over fixed mindset is something that I'm really big on so as long as your student is trying and growing and learning throughout the course of the semester that's what I really care about let me clear all these images of all right so moving forward if at any point you need to contact me I feel like I'm pretty good about getting back to email here's my email address is Casey. Is an English class so I'm going to click on my 4th. And their page should look like this if you open up my page the nothing here is the schedule so it's always posted your child can click on this link and open up the schedule for the week Hollywood High School standard schedule so what are Monday look like and then Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and Friday is what classes they have in at what time all here on my schoology page if they throw down the next two things are things that they are going to use every day this is resume length for my class and this is the digital notebook that they open up every Zumba class that we have and respond to a prompt so these two things are very important and they should definitely know where they are resume Lee should work if they're logging in with their LAUSD username and password and if they have solid internet connection there shouldn't be any issues with the zipper however I know Tech issues always so as long as we're communicating it should be okay below the zoom Link in the digital notebook is the is a link to show students how to submit a Google doc or submitted so that any point or like I'm not sure how to do something they can always click on this link it takes them directly to a video that shows them what to do and again if there's any confusion always they can contact me email me Reach Out and I am more than happy to help them already so the last thing I wanted to show in this video I know this is a lot of information is the parent resources folder it was at any point you get on to schoology and you want to check stuff with the class you can go ahead and click on this folder right here parent resources and I've got a couple things in this folder for you I've got my course syllabus so as you can see right more detailed information on the course to course overview my assignments how I grade them all right here class policies any kind of consequence class expectations are all posted in the syllabus which is online if you go back I also Incorporated a Hollywood High School resources page and kind of a little a little introduction about myself if you wanted check that out at any point on those are in there if you went back I also have attached a learning targets rubric folder so for the first semester all the learning targets and their rubrics are posted in here so for example for writing this is what right here sorry where's my this is what it would take for your child to get a four or an A in writing area in the writing learning Target for my class so that any point you wanted to take a look at this and get a better idea of what's going to be happening this first semester free and then the last thing is I also have a folder that's titled how to navigate schoology I know this can be so confusing and there can be a lot questions and issues though just to help navigate there is a document in here that has the school phone number School website and then also has all of the 9th grade teachers contact information email as well as our magnet coordinator or counselor link to help you get into the parent portal anything you need though if you're confused after watching this video you don't know how to get into the parent portal anything like that ask your child to login to schoology and you can actually pull this up from their page it's a lot of information and I'm sure there's and I also really wish that I could be meeting you all in person this is definitely different for everyone but just know that I am very very excited to have your child in my class this year I love my job I love Hollywood High School 9th grade is a big year there's a lot of transitioning there's a lot of growth and I'm just excited to be teaching this class this year and have your son or daughter in Maya in my group so any questions comments concerns please email me again Chasey.
