"We investigate the science of the environment in this interdisciplinary course including aspects of atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, climatology, ecology, geology, oceanography, physics, and toxicology. Yet, our study of human interaction with the environment must also interweave aspects of anthropology, economics, ethics, geography, history, political science, and sociology. This mixture of the natural and social sciences creates a college-level course that is designed to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies they need to: 1) understand interrelationships in the natural world, 2) identify and analyze natural and human-made problems and challenges, and 3) examine alternative solutions and their relative risks. An open and curious mind is encouraged on the part of all students as they hear and discuss ideas for a sustainable society of the 21st century and beyond."
