- Introduction:
- Sometimes it is easier to think through an issue if you are asked to “take a stand”
- on it.
- Procedure:
- 1. Provide articles for students to read: ProCon or Take A Stand. Create an unbiased portfolio of short reading selections, cartoons, pictures, stories, film clips. Provide an organizer for their notes.
- 2. (News/CNN Panel Discussion)/skit: TV Commentator/anchor, experts, famous individuals, politicians, celebrities weigh in on the topic
- 3. Post and read several statements to the class. They can stand in front of the sign that most closely represents their reaction to the statement you’ve read. They will then be asked to explain their particular stand on each issue. They are free to move to a different sign if/when their opinions change after hearing their classmates’ views.
- 3.When facilitating the activity, try to give equal time to representatives of
- different sides of the issue and solicit remarks from as many students as
- possible. Pose questions to help students articulate their thoughts.
- 4. You may want to use some of the following techniques to keep the debate on track. To show respect for viewpoints different than their own, have students paraphrase the opinions offered by others before they speak. To stay focused on
- content, not personalities, assign students a position that they
- must defend, even if it does not mesh with their personal values.

Yesler Terrace
First built in 1941, the 30-acre Yesler Terrace, located in downtown Seattle, was Washington's first subsidized housing development
Lesson Plan Relocating Residents: The Impact of Housing on Community
Architecture and neighborhood design have consequences on human activity and relationships. Redesigning public housing has a significant impact on residents who have lived, in some cases for generations, within specific architectural and human systems.
Background
Across the United States, low-income, urban neighborhoods are being redeveloped to benefit middle-class and upper-class housing, business, and cultural interests. The results can be seen as "positive" with updated buildings, improved transportation, reduced crime, more robust economies, and new parks and other amenities. But often, individuals, families, and entire neighborhoods are displaced or destroyed in this process, commonly known as "gentrification." Merriam-Webster defines gentrification as "the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents." Gentrification is taking place in many major American cities, with the biggest impacts made between 2000 and 2010 in Portland, Oregon; Washington, D.C.; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In those cities, 50% or more of lower-income areas have been gentrified.*
First built in 1941, the 30-acre Yesler Terrace, located in downtown Seattle, was Washington's first subsidized housing development as well as the country's first racially integrated public development. In 2013, the Seattle Housing Authority began a far-reaching redevelopment plan that would do away with 561 units and rebuild the site with approximately 5,000 housing units of which 1,800 will be subsidized for both low- and moderate-income residents. The plan also includes parks, a walking loop, community gardens, and improved connections to local neighborhoods, environmentally sensitive housing units, and business and office space.**
The Seattle Housing Authority has guaranteed that all current Yesler Terrace residents, in 2016, have the opportunity to move into the new development; however, residents face temporary dislocation during construction. Critics of the redevelopment note that such dislocation will disrupt the lives of vulnerable residents, including education, healthcare access, and other services.*** The short film, Even the Walls, co-directed by Saman Maydani and Sarah Kuck, depicts residents of Yesler Terrace as the demolition begins, exploring their thoughts and feelings about relocation. While some residents look forward to new and updated housing, others resist the change, and most lament the loss of a neighborhood that has been their home and refuge—in some cases, for generations.

Operation Hunger Free
You are to become part of a research team employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the intent of advancing the Green Revolution through the development of a new hybrid of corn. Test yields have been phenomenal and the intent is to introduce this new strain in areas that are experiencing severe hunger problems.
Your task, as a member of the research team, will be to decide to which country the seed will be provided. Seed is limited so your task is to choose the most promising countries based on your careful analysis of criteria as follows:
1) What country has the most conducive soil, climate, and topography for growing corn?
2) What irrigation methods are currently popular in this country and what other types may be successfully introduced?
3) Is corn currently part of the diet of the cultures found in this country? What factors may inhibit or encourage the introduction or increase of corn in the diet?
4) Are there potential political implications that must be considered?
A written report will list the reasons, based on the careful analysis of the above listed criteria, for why this research group believes their chosen country is the best. This name will ultimately be forwarded to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for funding for the first year.
Remember, the Department of Agriculture will depend solely on the advice of the research groups, will use the corn seeds only in the countries recommended for the first year, and the teams future employment with the U.S. Department of Agriculture will hinge on the successful outcome of the recommendation. Most importantly, you will impact the lives and futures of many people in three developing countries with your decision, so join your research group as part of OPERATION HUNGER FREE
You will be working with a team to determine your recommendation and your justification for the country you choose to assist. Your report will be one concise page of information that responds to the questions. You may include additional charts and/or pictures. Any Additional information you provide will be in the form of responses to oral questions. Good Luck!

note: the CORN SEED project will not be due until later this week; more info to follow; but you are free to start your research

Chicago: Farming on the Edge, leaves the downtown core to take a look at the increasing threat that middle class flight presents to farmland at the urban fringe. No longer are suburban communities dependent upon jobs in the downtown core. The availability of cars and the highway infrastructure has enabled a new kind of city to spring up around Chicago. These auto-dependent edge cities provide jobs and services to the residents of the surrounding suburbia, allowing them to avoid downtown altogether if they choose. Furthermore, these new job centers, already many miles from the old downtown core, enable suburbia to penetrate more deeply into the countryside.
Updates to this case study include new video footage and interviews profiling suburban growth on Chicago's fringe, new interviews with Dr. Richard Green as he visits areas undergoing land-use change, and new maps showing the extent of farmland loss.
Video Key Words: Use these terms to explain the changes in farming and land use in Chicago. Make a FLOW MAP that traces how land use has changed; under each box you may explain in 1-2 sentences that box of the map.
- Urban to Suburban Migration
- Suburban Sprawl
- Farmland Loss
- Edge Cities
- WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT further reduction of farm land near cities? Can a city control this change in land use? How? Should it control this? IF you had a farm near Chicago and were offered a large sum of money to sell your land for development....would you? why or why not? Let's just say you walked away from your farm with no debt and $5 million in your bank account.....

- Cultural Diffusion Helpful Hints – refer to the following information if you need help answering the questions above.
- 1) Culture Hearths – sources of civilization from which an idea, innovation, or ideology originates (e.g. Mesopotamia, Nile Valley), viewed in the context of time as well as space
- 2) Cultural diffusion – spread of an innovation, or ideology from its source area to another culture
- a) Expansion diffusion – an innovation, or ideology develops in a source area and remains strong there while also spreading outward
- 1) Contagious diffusion – nearly all adjacent individuals are affected (e.g. spread of Islam, disease)
- 2) Hierarchical diffusion – the main channel of diffusion some segment of those who are susceptible to (or adopting) what is being diffused (e.g. spread of AIDS, use of fax machines)
- 3) Stimulus diffusion – spread of an underlying principle (e.g. idea of industrialization)
- b) Relocation diffusion – spread of an innovation, or ideology through physical movement of individuals
- 1) Migrant diffusion – an innovation originates somewhere and enjoys strong-but brief-adoption, loses strength at origin by the time it reaches another area
- 2) Acculturation – when a culture is substantially changed through interaction with another culture
- 3) Transculturation – a near equal exchange between culture complexes
- c) Forces that work against diffusion:
- 1) Time-distance decay – the longer and farther it has to go, the less likely it will get there
- 2) Cultural barriers – prevailing attitudes or taboos

- REsearch project/Cultural Diffusion: You will research each of these questions using the Web sites listed below, using rock and roll music, or artifacts or the arts associated with it, as the subject in this study of diffusion. Be prepared to share your Research Topic Thursday. Presentations on Monday, Oct. 31.
- Although the United States has been called a “melting pot” because of numerous ethnic influences from its wide range and history of immigration, one aspect of American culture that originated in the United States is that of rock and roll music. The worldwide exposure of this native American music style is a classic example of cultural diffusion.
- Simply defined, diffusion is the spreading of ideas and objects by whatever means. Diffusion can occur through direct observation, word of mouth, the written word, or recorded sights and sounds. Human geographers are primarily interested in the spatial aspects of diffusion. Some of the key questions that geographers ask about diffusion of some cultural phenomenon are listed below. Please explore the following to select your focus in this study.
- Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio
- http://rockhall.com/
- Travel back half a century to The Fifties for information from the rock and roll’s early years.

- To focus on rock and roll’s original artists, see the Web site Biddeford.

- To see how the media (mostly radios and later t) impacted this musical style, visit this site:
- http://www.history-of-rock.com/indx.html (begin reading at the 13th break)
- Make a timeline and map of this diffusion. Illustrate with pictures or drawings.
We will have a SHOW AND TELL class presentation. 5 min max per presentation.

- Cultures can be many things, but they are certainly not static. Cultures can be changed through innovations and inventions, diffusion, acculturation, and revitalization. With the twentieth century advancements in communications, transportation, and trade, cultures in many parts of the world have become increasingly dynamic. Some nations fear an eventual loss of cultural identity with ever-increasing global interconnections. Cultural imperialism has been defined as the emerging global culture dominated by the world’s superpower, the United States. Some argue that U.S. cultural influence is at least as strong as its military influence.
- Industrialized nations have responded in various ways to America’s cultural dominance. France has become particularly wary of U.S. influence (e.g., la loi Toubon of 1994, a law which forbids French public entities and corporations engaged in public activities from using English expressions where there is a French equivalent). Canada has “allowed” considerable American cultural influence (e.g., most of the current National Hockey League franchises are now located in the U.S. and baseball and football in Toronto). Since World War II, Japan has incorporated whole segments of American culture (e.g., baseball & fast food), yet has remained distinctively Japanese. The less industrialized nations have also had different responses to American cultural dominance. Many of the Islamic-dominated of the Middle East have little tolerance for American cultural influences and use censorship and other tactics to keep this influence to a minimum. Some additional cultural conflicts between less developed nations and the U.S. grew out of the Cold War which often pitted “godless communists” versus “corrupt capitalists.”
- For this activity, decide where you stand on this issue. Choose between three opinions below. Select the opinion you most agree with and provide support for your argument (you may use outside resources).
- Opinion One – U.S. imperialism or world domination does exist! (Be sure to give examples).
- Opinion Two – No, U.S. imperialism does not exist. We are simply witnessing the development of a “global” culture that currently happens to be largely influenced by the United States.
- Opinion Three – No, U.S. imperialism does not exist. Increased nationalism in various countries will maintain separate and distinct cultures, with no one culture being dominant.
- YOUR TASK
- Write a short essay (5 paragraphs; no more than 2 pages) that illustrates where you stand on this issue. Your essay may be typed. Again, you may use outside resources. Outside resources (i.e. the internet) may help you decide which of the three opinions you subscribe to or help you to support the opinion you already have. Also, Use terminology and concepts to justify your point of view

This program, Boundaries and Borderlands, introduces the case study approach of the course. Here we examine the borderland region between the regions of North America and Latin America. A journey to Anapara and a Campestre near Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and then across the Rio Grande to EI Paso, Texas, highlights concepts of geography that are central to the course: relative location, regions, scale, and the spatial perspective.
The first case study, Twin Cities, Divided Lives, follows the story of Concha Martinez as she crosses between the U.S. and Mexico in order to make a life for herself and her children. It investigates how the relative locations of border cities influence economic development and migration

- The first video program, Lost in Space? Geography Training for Astronauts, explores geographical concepts in the context of a NASA space shuttle mission. It provides an overview of the spatial perspective, following the training of NASA astronauts as they attend classes to help them orient themselves when observing Earth from the space shuttle. The commanding view of earth from space points out the benefits of shuttle- and satellite-gathered imagery to help us better understand the geographical forces shaping our world: GO TO....

- Map Analysis Activity
- Directions: Students select a map from a newspaper, magazine, the Internet, or another source. Students examine the map carefully and think about the choices the cartographer (mapmaker) made. This will be turned in. Students must answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper and turn in with their map:
- Why did the cartographer choose the color or colors used on the map?
- Why did the cartographer choose the particular symbols used on the map?
- Is there some form of data the cartographer chose to place on this map? If so, what is it? Why do you think she/he included the data?
- Do you find the map useful? What are some of the map’s advantages and limitations?

Assignment
- To truly understand the world today, it must be viewed within a spatial context. Yet, this perspective is foreign to most high school students, especially those in North America.
- Course Description Human Geography is the study of where humans and their activities and institutions such as ethnic groups, cities, and industries are located and why they are there. Human geographers also study the interactions of humans with their environment and draw on some basic elements of physical geography In the National Geographic-Roper 2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey, only 17 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 could find Afghanistan on a map. Only 13 percent could find Iraq or Iran on a map of the Middle East and Asia, and only 14 percent could locate Israel ,
- North Americans must be educated about human geography as we face increasing globalization in the twenty-first century. GEOGRAPHY IS EVERYTHING.
- Do you Agree or disagree? Take a position and give three reasons to support your point of view.
