The Stranger Final Assignment Writing Choices:

 Choose one assignment from the following writing choices:

 

1) Is Meursault a threat to society? Does he deserve to be executed? According to Camus’ philosophy what other reason beside the murder is he being condemned for?

2) How does Meursault arrive at his philosophy to accept “the gentle indifference of the world”? What does he mean by this, and why does he embrace the idea? What contributing factors cause his revelation?

 3) While in jail, Meursault discovers a newspaper article about a Czechoslovakian man who is murdered by his mother and sister. How does this article relate to Meursault’s own trial for murder? How does this article expand the themes in The Stranger? How does it support Camus’ philosophy of the absurd?

 4) Write a monologue/soliloquy for Marie after Mersault receives the death penalty. What does she think of her relationship with Mersault? Does she have regrets? Does she understand his choices, his attitude towards her, towards the court, his lawyer etc? Has she had to defend her choice of staying with him to her friends, her mother, co-workers? Has she reconciled the murder he committed? Does she have regrets of her choice to love him?
