The School for Advanced Studies at Hollywood

The School for Advanced Studies (SAS) provides high-quality, differentiated instruction with a focus on depth, complexity, acceleration, and novelty. At Hollywood, SAS is a specialized Small Learning Community (SLC) offering advanced academic opportunities through two focused pathways: Humanities and STEAM.

Our program is designed to meet the unique educational needs of both gifted and high-achieving students in grades 9–12. Eligible students may be identified through categories such as Intellectual Ability, High Achievement, Specific Academic Ability, Creative Ability, and Leadership—or verified through test scores, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Explore the PLTW Biomedical Science Pathway

We are proud to offer the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science Program—an engaging, hands-on learning experience that brings science and medicine to life. Through this nationally recognized curriculum, students immerse themselves in real-world challenges and gain practical experience in the field of health sciences.

As part of the Biomedical Science pathway, students explore topics such as human anatomy and physiology, genetics, medical interventions, and public health issues. But they don’t just learn from textbooks—they take on the role of scientists and problem-solvers.

Students investigate real medical cases, use cutting-edge industry tools, collaborate in lab settings, and apply critical thinking to develop solutions to complex health problems. Along the way, they build essential skills like teamwork, communication, research, and innovation—skills that prepare them for success in college, careers, and beyond.

Whether students aspire to become doctors, nurses, researchers, or simply want to explore the world of health science, PLTW Biomedical provides a strong foundation and opens doors to exciting opportunities in STEM and healthcare.

Beyond the Classroom

SAS students actively participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including service clubs, social organizations, athletics, and leadership through the Associated Student Body (ASB).

Our program also integrates cutting-edge technology into student learning. Through access to our unique Makerspaces, students bring ideas to life with innovative tools and resources—enhancing projects, presentations, and hands-on learning experiences. This environment supports the development of advanced critical thinking and fosters a culture of academic excellence.

Key Outcomes of the SAS Program:
  • Ongoing academic growth based on student ability and performance

  • Accelerated achievement across subjects or within specific disciplines

  • Development of independence, self-direction, and academic ownership

  • Advanced use of technology for research and multimedia presentations

  • Strengthened critical thinking skills through rigorous, high-level coursework
