good afternoon parents and Guardians thank you so much for joining me today my name is Miss Escobedo are the kids call me Missy so I basically wanted to go over today for back to school night your parent resources which is actually in schoology so if you have your parent portal and you go into schoology you can go to your students course and then you press here on parent resources folder so if you press on that. You'll see a course syllabus just an outline and Grading explanation for it for 9th grade I do grade based on Mastery not on percentage so I'll talk a little bit about that so you can see here you have the rubric braided and also how to navigate if you still want really are quite sure how to navigate schoology or you haven't signed up for your parent portal you can press on how to navigate schoology and there's going to be a couple of videos are so the first video how do you sign up for portal in the second video is how to actually navigate to portal so you can always press on that if you need help signing up go back to parent resources folder here so we do have our course syllabus are our course you can go over this you know at your leisure it's three or four pages long biology so we are biology The Living Earth so we basically are looking at real real-world phenomena and how things work still looking at Labs learning skills like claim evidence reasoning working at investigation we have a bunch of learning targets that we are trying to master over time so it is about all kinds of units that we actually go through so we have the nature of science that we already finished so looking at how science works you know how to how to be questioning for science answer in a reasoning species populations and ecosystems that we talked about cycling of matter like nitrogen water this is our enemy has an interdisciplinary project classic come together you see a connection between all classes and that's going to be a social justice project so from my portion of it I actually am talking about cobas year and how cold it is affected different communities and wondering so it does really then we have inheritance of traits so this is General in evolution and climate change so the grading policy for my class I do grade based on Mastery so what that means is we actually Master skills throughout the year so it's not like they get a 0 on an exam 0 and it brings down their grade they actually have multiple chances to show me that they're putting in effort to revive and to take feedback and to make their skill so I want to show you the learning targets here's our learning Target so we have 8 learning targets for the whole year that were working on and for each learning Target they have about four or five chances to show Improvement and to get a better grade so it's really nice because the first one they're going to take my feedback they're going to take to your feedback they're going to revise it and then they're going to make it better and better and better by the fourth or fifth time they should be mastering that skill so what we should see is a Russian of great right in efforts and Grading on effort and so here's our learning targets we are questioning if they can ask questions make hypotheses and predictions modeling can they design and using models to support scientific investigation does experiment right lab carry out to generate data can they analyze that data that's analysis here are they to use mathematical Concepts critical in order to analyze that data exclamation what that data analysis mean can they use their claim evidence reasoning to show us that their dad communicate scientific information whether that's a research paper or the presentation that is a form of communication of scientific literature or scientific review argumentation are the kids able to provide and received critical evaluation so whether they're riding in argumentation or whether they're reading a scientific argumentation are they able to respect are they able to pull information out to say what to be better and are they able to give me a a statement about what the argument is so that's going to be argumentation and lastly I added this one this year was digital citizenship and the reason I say that is because clearly we are online technology right now don't quite understand so we're trying to really get that across this year their digital footprint is extremely important for the rest of their life it's something that anybody can come back to and see if you look back at that and see what so you really have to be careful what you're posting on your social media if you're making a meme so you want to make sure that kids understand what all of this is so digital citizenship is one of our learning Target we want to make sure they can use technology responsibly and respectfully and have an awareness of their digital so these are their learning targets that they're working 8 learning Target when you're learning to walk you eventually walk you master that skill no one's going to be like well you stay late time so you fail you walked it actually that's what you should be graded on so that's how it works in my class were practicing me skills and then we'll have an assessment they don't do great that's okay they take that feedback that I give them they learn they make it better so over time there so that's how I grade in in my car always here for you in the parent resources folder besides the syllabus explanation of course outline so this is a pacing plan which means it's not always on point to the day because everything changes when we're online sometimes were slower sometimes were faster but this is basically an overview of what we're going over for the year I do need to update it cuz I changed a lot now already right now we're actually right here so we're a bit behind which is okay we're going to be right here starting so this is where we're at now if you wanted to take a look at that later the
